Overview:
The Township Building Department reviews construction plans, issues permits, performs inspections, enforces building codes, and helps ensure that all structures in the township are safe, legal, and built to state standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Permits & Plan Review
- Reviews building plans for new construction, additions, and renovations to ensure they meet state building codes and local ordinances
- Issues permits for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work
- Confirms that proposed projects comply with zoning and safety requirements before work begins
- Inspections
- Conducts inspections at key stages of construction to verify that work is performed safely and according to approved plans
- Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial projects
- Ensures compliance with the Michigan Building Codes and related safety standards
- Code Enforcement
- Enforces state building codes and local ordinances related to construction, property maintenance, and safety
- Addresses unsafe structures, blight issues, and violations of building regulations
- Recordkeeping & Documentation
- Maintains records of permits, inspections, certificates of occupancy, and code enforcement actions
- Provides documentation for property owners, contractors, and real estate professionals
- Customer Service & Public Assistance
- Helps residents, builders, and contractors understand building requirements
- Answers questions about permits, inspections, and construction standards
- Provides guidance on safe and compliant building practices
- Community Safety & Quality of Life
- Protects residents by ensuring structures are safe and built to modern standards
- Supports orderly development and helps preserve the township’s character and property values

Building Permits
TO OBTAIN A BUILDING PERMIT, THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED:
- Single Family Dwelling
- Driveway Permit (Obtain from Saginaw Co. Road Commission)
- Septic and Well Permit (Obtain from Saginaw Co. Health Dept.)
- Drawing (One (1) set drawn to scale, showing)
- Floor Plan
- Elevation
- Cross Section
- Truss print when applicable
- Energy Form
- Plot Plan, showing property dimensions, all existing structures, and proposed structure(s)
- Accessory Building (garage, pole building, etc.)
- Driveway Permit (if applicable)
- Drawing (One (1) set drawn to scale and/or truss print where applicable)
- Plot Plan showing property dimensions, all existing structures, and proposed structure(s)
It is your responsibility to be aware of any deed restrictions or subdivision regulations.
A minimum of 24 hours is required for review of construction plans and zoning information before a permit can be issued.
